    In This Issue..

    * Euro gets beaten down again...
    * Why should we do anything now?
    * Brazil keeping inflation away...
    * ADP says 55,000 jobs created in May...

    Good day... And a Happy Friday to one and all! I suspect this will end up being a Fantastico Friday, but right now, not so much... Today is the Big Jobs Jamboree, and the cable news stations are spinning it quite nicely. So nicely put that stock jockeys are believing the spin and running stock futures higher. I've got that to talk about today, and more debt stuff... Believe me dear reader, I wish I didn't have to talk about this debt stuff, but I feel as though me and a few of my friends are the only ones doing so, and I don't want you to become like the rest of the country and become 'comfortably numb' with the deficit figures!...

    Good day... And a Thunderin' Thursday to you! The heavy rain is back! Just in time to ruin my first Cardinals game of the year too! Yes, a day game today, and it's raining... UGH! Oh well, time to start the letter... There are a couple of Big things to talk about today that happened yesterday, so let's get set, ready, go!

    OK... Front and Center this morning, we have the euro's rise yesterday, and Gold's awful performance... Let's go to the euro's rise first...

    The euro did a little magic act yesterday, defying gravity, by rising VS the dollar during the day, while every other currency not called U.S. dollars, Japanese yen, or Chinese renminbi, was getting sold like funnel cakes at a state fair. Does this sound suspicious to you? It did to me... And I told Chris during the day, that it sure looked like European Central Bank (ECB) intervention......
  • Bias To Buy Dollars Remains In Place...

    In This Issue..

    * Some healing in the currencies...
    * What's a dead cross?
    * Norway, S. Africa and Norway rally...
    * U.S. deficit spending continues...

    Good day... And a Terrific Tuesday to you! I'm Back! Boy, was that ever a great idea that our little Christine had a couple of weeks ago, when she heard my schedule... 'you should take off that Monday'... Yes sirree Bob! That was the best idea I've heard in a month of Sundays! So... As you can see, or will see soon, I'm full of you know what and vinegar this morning... Let's get going on this Terrific Tuesday!

    Well... Front and Center this morning, the non-dollar currencies have seen some healing... Some, not much, but some... But these mini-rallies are on tenterhooks folks, they can be reversed in a New York Minute... And, now that I look back at the screens, that's exactly what's happening! UGH! These turn-arounds are beginning to give me a rash!...
  • German Investor Confidence Fades...

    In This Issue..

    * The dollar rallies on weak German data...
    * Stronger overall data for the U.S. last week...
    * JAL files bankruptcy and yen rallies...
    * Bank of Canada meets today...

    Good day... And a Terrific Tuesday to you! I hope you all had the opportunity to enjoy a 3-day weekend... I realize that not everyone has the opportunity, so I don't want to sound like I'm rubbing it in... It's really foggy outside this morning. I live in a little river town outside of St. Louis, and we get fog there all the time, but once I cross the river, it dissipates quickly... But not this morning, the fog was with me all the way to work! Something right out of an old-time horror movie with Lon Chaney...

    Well... Yesterday, I was doing quite a bit of reading, after suffering 'football overload', which by the way, were not very good games... Sure, good for the winning teams' fans, but I didn't have a dog in any of those fights, so I just wanted to see a good game, only to be disappointed... OK, now back to my reading...

    I was reading a good, thoughtful story about how currency swings could be dying down, as we return to fundamentals... You know, me... I jumped from my chair, and click my heels together in joy! OK, no, I'm not physically able to do that any longer, so I did it in my mind! But a return to fundamentals? I'm all over that like a cheap suit! One of the fundamentals that the story highlighted that would be taken into consideration by traders, would be interest rate differentials... Which, I've always considered to be a strong reason to own a currency, but not the 'end-all'......
  • The Markets Ignore Bernanke...

    In This Issue..

    * The dollar continues to get bought...
    * German Investor Confidence weakens...
    * The Carry Trade shifts to Japan again...
    * More deficit spending...

    Good day... And a Terrific Tuesday to you! Not a Terrific Tuesday for the non-dollar currencies though, as the overnight markets have marked them down once again, and favored the dollar... More on that in a minute... I got a chance to meet up with some old friends and co-workers last night, at a holiday party... I had to leave early though, my leg couldn't stand that long... UGH!

    OK... The daily noise, has the bias to buy going toward the dollar this morning... For some unknown reason, and I emphasize this here... The markets are not listening to Big Ben Bernanke, when he says that current near zero interest rates will remain for 'some time to come'... You see, the markets are under the impression that he's giving us a head fake, and will raise rates aggressively very soon, for the data that has printed recently is of the "need to raise interest rates before inflation takes the economy hostage" kind of stuff......
  • Gold Continues to Soar!

    In This Issue..

    * It's a Risk On Day!
    * Commodity Currencies soar!
    * Norway wants to remove stimulus soon...
    * EX-CBO Director talks about the deficit...

    Good day... And a Marvelous Monday to you! It's Thanksgiving Week! I know I mentioned it was on the horizon about 10 days ago, but now the week is here! I don't know what your plans are for Thanksgiving, but I hope they include giving Thanks for the men and women of the armed forces... You may not agree with their mission, but supporting them with good thoughts shouldn't enter the equation...

    OK... On Friday morning, it was a Risk Off day... But as the day wore on, Risk came back into the currencies.... And today, it's REALLY a Risk On day! Apparently, at some time on Friday, some one with a lick of brains, realized that the Fed is going to keep their stimulus measures, which include near zero interest rates, for some time to come... Why would that deep six the dollar? Ahhh grasshopper, apparently you haven't been paying attention in class! No worries... Here's the skinny...

    ...
  • A Gusher Of Federal Money...

    In This Issue..

    * No currency movement to speak of...
    * Buffett calls out the deficits...
    * PIMCO does too!
    * SNB selling francs to stem gains....

    Good day... And a Wonderful Wednesday to you! Another day with the medicine in my knee and it feels better yet today... I did have to ice it last night though, I guess I'm still not out of the woods here, but I can see the exit!

    There was very little in the way of movement in the currencies yesterday. The euro moved to 1.4150, but was brought back down to the 1.41 handle overnight. Stocks rebounded yesterday, which gave a few risk takers the intestinal fortitude to dip their toes back into the risk assets water... But there just weren't enough of them to give the currencies the push they deserved to get....
  • OMB Makes New Deficit Forecast...

    In This Issue..

    * The BLS adds jobs...

    * Growing Deficits again...

    * Jim Rogers....

    * A Trade Surplus for Canada...

    Good day... And a Terrific Tuesday to you! Well... I'm here! Lost Wages... No I mean, Las Vegas! It's such a long flight here! UGH! And the plane was packed... Like I said about a month ago, when you take a flight, it sure doesn't seem like people have cut back on spending!

    OK... Well, the currencies took a breather VS the dollar yesterday, and basically traded right around the currency round-up levels most of the day. Overnight, things were pretty quiet too... The markets are trying to figure out which way they are going to go with the dollar... The Deficit is growing, which SHOULD be bad for the dollar, but in recent times, fundamentals get a little hazy at times. So... Let's go to the tape on the Office of Budget Management (OMB)...
  • Currencies Continue to Rally...

    In This Issue..

    * An auction announcement...
    * Euro soars!
    * Gold back to $900...
    * Who's telling the truth?

    Good day... And a Happy Friday to you! A Fantastico Friday to boot! I leave for Bermuda very early tomorrow morning, so no late night shenanigans for me tonight! HA! I'm still trying to make sure I've beaten that pneumonia, and being a "good boy"!

    Well... Front and center this morning, we have a Big currency rally going on... Recall yesterday, I told you of the beginning of the rally... Well, it really got legs as the day went on, and once again, it was not sold off overnight, but added to! Here's what I believe, and you won't see this anywhere else, my friends, is moving these currencies so violently higher VS the dollar......
  • UK data boosts the dollar...

    In This Issue..

    * UK data boosts the dollar...
    * US GDP falls further...
    * Norway cuts rates...
    * Big wins by MIZZOU and BLUES...

    Good day... I want to start this mornings Pfennig with a big congratulations to the MIZZOU Tigers who pulled off what most believed was an unlikely win over Memphis last night. What a game! They move on to the Elite Eight to play powerhouse UCONN on Saturday.

    The currency markets weren't as exciting as the basketball games yesterday, as the dollar held in a fairly tight range. The big move came in early morning trading as a report was released in the UK showing their economy's contraction was worse than previously thought. This news was GDP in the UK fell 1.6% in the 4th quarter of 2008 vs. the previous quarter. And the outlook presented by the Bank of England is not rosy. BOE Chief Economist Spencer Dale said this morning that the British economy's short term prospects are 'bleak'. Chuck has brought up the comparison between the UK and US economies several times, as the UK economy looks like mirror image (albeit smaller) of the US. The UK economy has been slightly ahead of the US in the race toward economic meltdown. Unfortunately the US Fed seems to be shadowing every move by the UK, cutting rates to near zero and then using 'quantitative easing' to force them down even further....
