  • Aussie Jobs Soar!

    In This Issue..

    * A back-n-forth day in currencies...
    * Aussies create 3X more jobs than forecast!
    * Euro to remain alternative reserve currency...
    * Brazilian Sov. Wealth Fund achieves weaker real...

    Good day... And a Tub Thumpin' Thursday to you! The daytime temperature reached 49 yesterday... As our little Christine would say... 'get the sharts out!' HAHAHA!

    Today, we're chock-full-o-stuff to look for, starting with a European Central Bank (ECB) meeting, and going through the morning here in the U.S. there'll be more 'stuff' for us to look for, like Retail Sales, and since it's a Thursday, the Weekly Initial Jobless Claims will also print. The Fed's Beige Book printed yesterday afternoon, and we've got that to discuss this morning too... So, let's get this Tub Thumpin' Thursday going, eh?

    Front and Center this morning... The Australian Jobs report printed yesterday afternoon, and it looks like we'll be able to put another mark in the "pro" column for an Aussie rate hike in Feb... Here's the skinny... Australian employment soared for a 4th straight month, as jobs created were 3 times more than economists estimated! The total jobs created was 35,200, and the jobless rate fell to 5.5% (from 5.6%)...

    Good day... And a Wonderful Wednesday to you! The 'January Thaw' continues... Hopefully, in time to save the orange trees in Florida! That's all we need right now is to see food prices ratcheting even higher than they already have gone... NOT!

    HEY! Good morning to you! I've had a very typical morning, with no surprises, no scavenger hunts for anything, didn't have to stop on my way in for anything, so, I was feeling pretty good, until I got here, and saw the price of Oil...

    The price of Oil has dropped from $83.18 a week ago, to $79.80 this morning... Why did this spoil my day? Well, like Lloyd Bridges in the Airplane movie, I must have picked a bad day to fill my gas tank, the other day, when Oil was so high!

  • Brazil To Benefit From New Carry Trade?

    In This Issue..

    * The dollar fights back...
    * Government deficit spending deep sixes us...
    * Brazilian rate hikes on the table...
    * Round Two of the PPT thoughts...

    Good day... And a Thunderin' Thursday to you! Well... It's not really Thunderin' outside, but it is snowing, with about 3-4 inches on the ground already, and the snow coming down so thick that seeing is difficult. I made it here, but then I drive a car that was made to go in stuff like this! Pretty soon, my phone will begin to ring, with colleagues calling to ask me how the roads were...

    Well... We had more probing higher in the non-dollar currencies only to see the gains wipe away at the end of the day yesterday. Still, as I told a radio audience in Oregon yesterday, traders, investors, etc. still believe the euro is worth more than the dollar by quite a bit... Gold also gave back some gains overnight......
  • Risk Returns...

    In This Issue..

    * Currencies maintain their gains...
    * Aussie and real jump higher!
    * U.S. manufacturing is stronger...
    * Following Japan...

    Good day... And a Terrific Tuesday to you! Wow, it's cold here! I had to stop for gas this morning, and had some very bad thoughts about Al Gore, while standing there! That's funny! And, as one of my fave comedians says... 'that's funny, I don't care who you are!' HA

    Hey! I exchanged emails with the Mogambo Guru yesterday... He's such an interesting person! He's enjoying his time away from writing, playing golf, and spending his profits from Gold! If you need a Mogambo fix, you should check out this web site: www.bringbackmogambo.com

    OK... The first trading day of 2010, was interesting, as it certainly looked like risk was back on the table, and the Emerging Markets, and any currency that has some yield, were the beneficiaries of this return to risk taking. It certainly didn't take traders long to get back to dissin' the dollar in favor of these risk assets...I will warn you about this first day of the year move... Let's see if it carries through the rest of the week... If so, then the risk taking bus is about to leave the station, you might just want to be on that bus!

  • It's Not My Fault!

    In This Issue..

    * Currencies mount a mini-rally...
    * Let's blame someone else...
    * Eurozone manufacturing rises...
    * Brazil tries something new...

    Good day... And a Marvelous first Monday of 2010 to you! It's very cold here, much like most of the country, and there's no forecast that has our temperature even reaching the freezing mark this week... So... It's hunker down, stoke up the fire, and find a good book to read weather!

    The Chill that has settled down on us here in the Midwest, has tried to settle in on the currencies going into the end of the year... But... Here we are, it's 2010, a new year, and new ideas for the currencies... We'll have to wait-n-see what comes out this week and next, for there will be plenty of pundits, analysts, writers, and so on, that come out with their forecasts for 2010... Me? The song remains the same folks... Fundamentally speaking, there's only one direction the dollar should go... But, then, we need to get to fundamentals again, eh?...
  • High Yielders Rally...

    In This Issue..

    * Is it Game On for Carry Trades again?
    * A Trade-Free Zone for Southeast Asia!
    * 10-year yield rise will shut down the mortgage rally...
    * A min-rally for the euro this morning...

    Good day... And a Terrific Tuesday to you! I'm already draggin' the line today on the 2nd day back from vacation! UGH! The High Yielders are back to work this week, as the currencies of Australia, South Africa, and Brazil are attempting a come-back VS the dollar. This and more, as we head into the last Tuesday of 2009...

    Well... The last Monday of 2009, was uneventful with the currencies remaining in Tupperware ranges (tight that is!), and with little to show in the way of any measurable appreciation VS the dollar. There was no sign of the U.S. Corporations repatriating their profits yesterday as was rumored... Of course they still have today, tomorrow and Thursday to do so...

    In This Issue..

    * Thin trading brings tight ranges...
    * Searching for the exits...
    * Mixed data in Europe...
    * Yen and Real make strange bedfellows...

    Good day...We had a pretty quiet 24 hours in the currency markets, with the majors all trading in a very narrow band vs. the US$. We will probably have a few more of these days during the next two weeks, as currency desks are manned by the backups and trading thins out. Many of the institutional investors will be moving to cash in order to preserve gains for their year end statements, and individual investors will have the holidays to take them away from the markets. Occasionally we will get a rogue piece of economic data which shoves the market one way or the other, but we typically won't see any long term positions being put on during the last two weeks of the year....
  • The Bias To Buy Dollars Remains In Place...

    In This Issue..

    * The dollar continues to get bought...
    * The A$ gets rocked!
    * Riksbank keeps rates unchanged...
    * 10-year yields inch higher once again...

    Good day... And a Wonderful Wednesday to you! The end of the line, so-to-speak for me until after Christmas, as I begin my winter vacation tomorrow. Yesterday, I told you about having a conversation with one of my fave economists on Monday night. Well, she told me that she was worried about me. That when she reads the Pfennig, I sound like I'm too stressed out, and taking this stuff to personally. She said she was afraid I was going to have a heart attack writing the Pfennig one day!

    WOW! OK... So here's the deal today, my last Pfennig before Christmas... I'm not going to talk about the deficit spending fools in Washington D.C., I'm not going to talk about the national debt, I'm not going to talk about anything that gets my feathers ruffled... It's all seashells and balloons for yours truly today!...
  • A Mixed Bad of Data...

    * China's Factory Output soars!
    * Brazil exports "stuff"!
    * Calling a bottom in Gold...

    Good day... And a Happy Friday to one and all! The 40 mph winds have stopped, which makes the cold a little more bearable... So... With the sun out yesterday, I would have to say that today will be a Fantastico Friday... Our office get together is tonight, should be a good time...

    Well... Yesterday, the non-dollar currencies looked like they were ready to break out of their funk against the dollar, led by the high yielders of Australia, and especially New Zealand... But, that flamed out as the day went on as the data for the U.S. was mixed, and did not give anyone a warm and fuzzy about the general direction of the economy....
  • Aussie Jobs Surge!

    * High yielders rebound...
    * Kiwi surges 2-full cents!
    * SNB softens tone on franc strength
    * The U.S. Debt Clock...

    Good day... And a very cold Tub Thumpin' Thursday to you! I remember back to this summer, when in August, we were camping, and it was only 75 degrees, and old man at the country store said to me... 'We're going to pay for this come winter'... I have a bad feeling right now that the old man will be bang on! UGH!

    OK... A chill crept over the dollar bulls overnight, when Australia announced their latest jobs data. Since that time, the dollar has been sold, albeit not frantically, but sold nonetheless, and the high yielders, like Aussie dollars have been the main destination of those funds created from the dollar sales.

  • It's A Risk On Monday!

    In This Issue..

    * Currencies recover from Friday sell off!
    * Gold also recovers!
    * RBA to meet tonight!
    * Canada to exit their recession?

    Good day... And a Marvelous Monday to you! I hope your Thanksgiving was special. I had a great time on my day off on Friday, as we went to the country and cut down our Christmas Tree. Quite early for us this year, but you have to take advantage of the 'windows' of time when they pop open! I have to say something front and center this morning though... Last week when I would say we need to give thanks to groups of people, I missed out on something very special to me... My health... I'm thankful that I was allowed to fight cancer, and be around now when my little granddaughter, Delaney Grace is so darn cute!

    OK... Front and center on the currencies this morning, we have the fears of a default in Dubai, fading, and that brings the risk takers back out... So, we had one day of bloodletting on Friday, and come Monday, it'll be alright, Come Monday, I'll be holding you tight, no wait! Come Monday, the tourniquet had been applied, and things are back on track. The Big Dog, euro is off the porch, chasing the dollar down the street once again, and is trading at 1.5050, as I begin to write this morning.

    * Bernanke digs out some old words...
    * Risk on, Risk off...
    * Brazil to have a different meeting outcome?
    * Winter Olympics are in Canada...

    Good day... And a Terrific Tuesday to you! What a ride on Mr. Toad (Bernanke's) Wild Ride yesterday for the currencies! Gold? Well, at one point in the day, Gold had shot up $24 on the day! It topped out at $1,142... The shiny metal then gave some back on profit taking, but Whew! Gold holders have got to love it! Those that keep waiting for a pull-back... Well, they might be still waiting when the cows come home...

    Yesterday, we had a couple of Fed Heads talking, but the Big Kahuna, stood out, and moved the markets with his statements... Here's the skinny......

    * Pay Czar dreams...

    * An Asian Union?

    Good day... And a Thunderin' Thursday to you! It's raining outside, so... It must be a Thursday! Amazing how many Thursdays have seen rain this fall! The ground isn't the only thing that's getting watered down this morning...

    Front and Center this morning, the euro traded well past 1.50 yesterday afternoon, and drug all the other non-dollar currencies higher as the day went on. But overnight, all that giddiness with seeing the euro over 1.50 for the first time since August of 2008 (and then it was on the way down, instead of this time on the way up!), has been watered down......

    * Niall Ferguson speaks his mind...
    * BOC leaves rates and statement unchanged...
    * Bollard gives the green light!

    Good day... And a Wonderful Wednesday to you! How many people out there know about "network neutrality"? Well, if you don't know, you're about to find out tomorrow, when it will be decided upon... I'm not going to get into it, because after you find out what it is you'll know why I didn't explain... All I'll say is that this is just another thing that's flying below the radar that's about to be thrown in our laps...

    OK... Well... Yesterday, after signing off and hitting the 'send button' for the Pfennig, I saw a story that shot across the desk, and then a follow up was sent to me by Don Ries later in the morning. The story was about the Brazilian Gov't imposing a 2% tax on capital inflows... This was done in an attempt to slow down the Brazilian economy by slowing down the "hot money" that's going into the Brazilian stock market by foreigners... Talk about throwing a cat among the pigeons!...

    Good day... And a Marvelous Monday to you! The Regular Season for Baseball is over, except... The Tigers and Twins have to play a one-game playoff today! Talk about exciting! And that's just to see who gets to go the playoffs!

    Well... Friday's Jobs Jamboree did disappoint as I had the feeling they would, printing a disappointing -263,000 jobs lost in September. The Unemployment Rate also rose to 9.8%... Now we all know that when all the people that are truly unemployed are counted, that the Unemployment Rate goes to 16%, but the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) will have none of that so-called counting ACTUAL Unemployed people!...
